Isn't that Diego Garcia? If so then it's used as a launch pad for the Iraq war. Also, there's a fascinating story behind how that came to be. The British basically deported the whole island nation of people to another nearby island where shortly afterwards they began literally dying of depression from missing their homeland.Check it out an article on it here: http://www.hartford-hwp.com/archives/27b/036.htmlAnd you can find a documentary about it on many torrent sites called "Stealing a Nation"
Is it just me, or is it impossible to reply to comments...? I can't find the little reply link anymore...Edit: NVM, they came back within a minute... weird.
Actually, I think the link points to Morsby Island, which is a bit north of Diego Garcia. Google Earth blocks out the same portion of the north east quadrant as Google Maps does.
I was there for a few days during the first Iraq war. I was assigned to a C-5 Galaxy crew and we took a load of 1000-lb bombs there for the B-52s. It's one of the most beautiful beaches I've ever seen and was able to take postcard-perfect pictures with just a disposable camera. Too bad only military get to go there (as far as I know). I went snorkeling there too... the sea life around there is amazing! I also got the worst sunburn I've ever had in my life, and it occured in the shortest possible time. Oh, by the way right-h.man, there is nowhere near seven hundred thousand people living on that island. That's just rediculous. I'd be surprised if there were 1000 people there. There just isn't enough room.

The base seems like a nice place to be stationed.
