google-code-updates.blogspot.com — Google Summer of CodeTM 2007 is on! Last year, Google funded over 600 students in 93 countries to work with 100 open source groups. We're extremely happy to announce that we'll be holding Google Summer of Code again this year. We look forward to helping new contributors join the community and write more code.

I attended Ohio Linuxfest 2006 and met Chris DiBona from Google. He ended up being the keynote speaker as the scheduled speaker couldn't make it on time. He is very involved with the Summer of Code. It was a very insightful look into how Google views open source technology. I think the Summer of Code is a great idea. One of the things he spelled out was Google's stance on open source: * Google can maintain their independence from external companies. With open source they can do what they want to do in-house, applying their creativity to whatever project comes to mind. * With open source they have adaptability and flexibility. They get to choose what they do, when they do, and how they do it. They can bury themselves deeper into an application and enhance their services in a way they judge is best for Google. * open source allows them to do things out of the ordinary. * It appeals to the Google ethic. Conclusion: Summer of Code gets a definate digg. Long live open source and community based coding!

I'd pay for video support in Adium. I hate switching back to iChat to conference.

Hah, same. I really wish I could do this, but I think they want CS majors or something. I think that's really not a necessary qualification since I'm sure some CS majors aren't that great at actually programming something on their own and conversely some high school students who have taken APCS or taught themselves programming could do a much better job. I'm not sure whether I would be able to do a good job, but it would be nice to be given a try, since I took APCS in 10th grade.Clarification: AP CS, for those not in the US, is an Advanced Placement course, i.e. a college level course that you get college credit for. CS is computer science. It's equivalent to a first year course in CS in Java.
