It's just finding open directory listings of files (intitle:index of). Then it looks for "mp3" and your artist in that file listing. Then it eliminates those listings that have html, php and asp files or the string "last modified".Play around with it. You might find more!
Check out mp3Salad (<a class="user" href="http://www.mp3salad.com)">http://www.mp3salad.com)</a> it searches Google for music using a similar technique, without making you type in that long search string, just plug-in the artist or song name and go. It also tries to block out sites from the results that don't contain real links, this makes it much easier to find downloadable mp3s. And you can listen to the songs that you find right there on the site or save them as a playlist (in 4 different formats) to listen on another player like Yahoo Music Engine, iTunes, WinAmp, ect..

No digg for using "madonna" as your example for an artist.

"index of" "parent directory" "last modified" -htm -html -shtml -phtml -asp -jsp -php "[SND]" pendulum<a class="user" href="http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&q=%22index+of%22+%22parent+directory%22+%22last+modified%22+-htm+-html+-shtml+-phtml+-asp+-jsp+-php+%22%5BSND%5D%22+pendulum">http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&q=%22index+of%22+%22parent+directory%22+%22last+modified%22+-htm+-html+-shtml+-phtml+-asp+-jsp+-php+%22%5BSND%5D%22+pendulum</a>This works good as well. It's a bit more cleaned up.Just replace pendulum to whatever artist you want.
