techcrunch.com — Google will launch Docs & Spreadsheets later this evening at docs.google.com. It integrates the previously separate Writely and Spreadsheet product silos into a single control panel and admin area (the previous sites for those products redirect to docs.google). What shot across the bow?I tried to use google spreadsheet to make my dinner menu for the week. It was horrible getting the data in, formatting, and printing. I gave up and put it in excel.Let me reiterate: Just because it is online, uses AJAX, is "web 2.0", and made by google does NOT mean it is good, useful, or needed.

"only people with an internet connection can use"...and Excel can only be used at the computer is was saved on. That's the point. a lot of people usually have a connection and don't want to be emailing, uploading or thumb-driving spreadsheets all over the place. I love it.

But you're able to work on a document, in real time, with others using virtually any Internet connected computer. Soon (I would hazard a guess) you won't need to cart your laptop around with you.... just flip open your PDA / Mobile Phone and see the latest changes to the document / spreadsheet / presentation / database. With ubiquitous connectivity it'll be a great way to work. And let's face it, Google probably back up their data more often than I do :)

Who always wins at Monopoly? The annoying guy that buys every freakin' property he lands on. Oh sure, you got Boardwalk and Park Place, but the buy with a foothold in every other corner of the map is the one who wins.Google may not have any hotels built just yet (except for Search) but they will eventually.
