@blmbj:RTFA. Web History!=IP Logging. Wanna know the REAL paranoid truth? MOST websited keep an IP log of activity. Google is only different in that they don't really ever delete theirs. That aside, the tracking the ARTICLE was talking about requires Google Toolbar.

Is it really fair to throw it back in someone's face with the whole "You don't have to use the service" business? If this were Microsoft exposing a new privacy violation, it would have everyone who's ever commented Digg in an uproar.Personally, I think it's a bit of bait and switch, so it's a tad on the shady side. You get nice and comfortable using their services, and they they change their terms. Granted, if it's only for those who use a certain toolbar app, that's entirely different, as Alexa has been screwing people for years that way, but at least they had fair notice beforehand, they just chose to ignore it. If it's attaching browsing history to the user accounts of people who use other Google services, and have done so for some time, I think it's very much something to be a little disturbed by. The very notion of having any sort of trail follow behind you, especially in this day and age, is frightening, strictly speaking on a political point of view (as in if you don't like the head of state's point of view, there might be worse things in the near future than district attorneys getting fired) just based on the profiling possibilities.

First of all, in order to use Search History, you need to install Google Toolbar (not possible with the browser I'm using). You need to enable PageRank. You then need to go enable Search History MANUALLY. No existing Google accounts had search history automatically enabled at any time! Buried for inaccurate summary.

My friend and I were actually discussing this the other day. I use several computers (either personal or on work), and having a managed way of keeping track of my entire browser history would be nice. Here's what they'd have to do:1. Allow me to have "profiles", so the browsing I do at home doesn't come across on a work computer unless I specifically want to search through it.2. Allow me to delete history and know that it has been completely deleted off Google's servers. Of course this will never be 100%, but I don't expect Google to lie to us.

2: Their data centers should be checked by ordinary people/users once in a while to see whether deleted data really gets erased.Because they want to operate and serve people world wide, they should make their hardware open to all their users, for we don't want to serve THEM.
