alleyinsider.com — Google has announced layoffs. Not contractors. Not hourly workers. Googlers. Not many, thankfully--only 100--and some may be able to find jobs elsewhere in the company. But they're all in HR, which tells you something about how quickly Google has scaled back its own growth expectations.

"now you know it's really bad". No one is immune to layoffs. Remember how people were saying Wal-Mart and Toyota are doing hot, well they're also laying off. Capitalism doesn't work!

This didn't just come out of nowhere. They were planning all of this for a while. They had huge growth for a while so they increased their HR and let people run with whatever projects they came up with. Now they are scaling back and being more selective about which products to devote resources to.

I'm pretty sure he meant that the journos volunteered to be laid off (they wanted to take a severance package), not that they have unpaid journos doing the writing.

While I agree about adsense, GOOG has more than enough human capital (not to mention the obvious power to sucker the best of the best into working on the cheap) and $$$ to delve into as many projects as they can dream. However, maybe they should stick to IT.. not moonbases.
