googleblog.blogspot.com — Neven Vision comes to Google with deep technology and expertise around automatically extracting information from a photo. It could be as simple as detecting whether or not a photo contains a person, or, one day, as complex as recognizing people, places, and objects

The tool that stores the pictures locally, which Riya doesn't currently, will be the big winner here. I would gladly pay $100 for software that can do this and let me keep all the data on my own computer.

If they can recognize face, it will not be far that they can recognize letters and numbers in your pictures, a carefully designed machine learning system can trace every possible detail of your life.Hope that they will keep "not to be evil"

I'd like to see picasa's importer organize pictures into folders based on when they were taken

It would be nice to have the ability to ask Picasa to pick out all the photo's with a certain person in...*obligatory* Would make porn more searchable.

"Photosynth takes a large collection of photos of a place or object, analyzes them for similarities, and displays them in a reconstructed 3-Dimensional space." != Face recognition, it does = ability to join photos together for a 360 view.

This is exactly what I've always wanted to be able to do. Right now it's futile to go through your photos describing them for a later search. At least if you take as many pictures as I do.

I have over 14,000 photos tagged. How many pictures do you have?

This is very true but you can already find out a great deal about someone through a simple address search in a phone book. Pictures may allow people to recognize the person they are searching for in a crowd, but I think enough information about people is already accessible. The possibility of this new technology just allows for computer generated searches rather than time consuming hand searching.
