I have been thinking about this for quite some time, and came to a bad realization. The shout system actually DOES contain a lot of the gaming on digg. If it were not for shouts, then specific stories would artificially get a boost of diggs from an outside source. "Friends digging your submission" is in the digg algorithm to make more people need to digg it to reach front page, but I think they shout also implement a "dugg from a shout" part in the algo, so that these stupid shoutspam stories take much longer to reach front page. The next paragraph that you read is the ONLY way to make digg the 'utopia' that most of us hope that it becomes. No shouts in upcoming. Submission usernames hidden in upcoming. (and I'm not 100% sure if this is possible...) Only give a submission a URL when it reaches front page; that way, it cannot be shared yet with people off of digg. But there is a leak in the system. This is not all it takes to make it 'perfect.' You know why? Because of that stupid search function on digg. It is helpful to regular users, but if you implement everything above, it is a menace, because you can tell somebody to digg a story just by saying "search for this, and digg the second result," or something along those lines. This is a HUGE problem, in my opinion. That is because, if something big happens (lets use the example string "toronto explosion") and I just heard about it on the news and want to get it to the front page, I have to either search for it, or submit a new story. It would be lame to put in a duplicate story if one already had a couple hundred diggs, and going through the submission form to search for something would blow. What needs to happen is a brainstorming session of how you can change SEARCH so that nobody could game the system, but also give the most relevant story to the people who need it most. I have no good ideas how to do that, off the top of my head, so I am guessing that finding a solution, and implementing it would be ridiculously challenging. And this is why digg is FUBAR. Unless, by miracle, the things noted above are implemented, digg will ALWAYS be gamed by some people. So what do we do as users? Do we sit back, and accept the fact that we are fuct, and this site has gone down the drain? Well, not yet at least. Use that bury button, and use it often. Either people aren't using it enough, or the developers have to put more power on what that button does in the algo. Either way, too much s**tty content is making it to the front page.
