gigaom.com — Google?s Mountain View WiFi network is ready to go, though not open to the public, but about 100 people are already starting to receive invitations to test the service. A few of the residents were saying that they could already see the SSID number when their computer searches for a WiFi signal. That made a Google spokesperson look a bit nervous.

You people are thinking more into this "issue" with the SSID then you need to. It's not a technical problem as most seem to be replying to. It's an easy thing to fix and most people with intermediate wireless skills know this and fix this. The big deal is that the all and powerful smart Google seems to have forgotten about that or just isn't worried about it.

"that is really cool, i have never heard of that before. i may have to pick up a FON router and start sharing the wifi"I already emailed them with a couple of questions. I plan to buy one of their routers in the next couple of days.

I do not know if many people know this, but Google and Earthlink are getting together to provide San Fransisco with free 300k wireless and 1000k for a subscription. I believe this just might be a test of sorts and not a PR stunt. Just google the story!
