"WGA does not affect legitimate users. "Rubbish. It absolutely does to.Not only is it another hoop to jump through for software you legitimately purchased, but I've had a legitimate copy (as in, just removed the plastic from the box, broke all the "genuine" seals for the first time), still fail the WGA. Then, you have to get on the phone, waste an additional 15 minutes straightening it out, then you can continue your installation. It doesn't happen to most, but it most certainly can happen. And if you don't believe me, google it and I'm sure you'll find other accounts of the same issue. It's annoying at best. It can be bypassed by those who care, and the only thing it does is confuse people who don't know much about computers.
"Package Managers are nice, but you are at the mercy of the person/company doing the packaging, and if they don't want to distribute your app, then a good package manager does no good."Of course it does. The package manager is one thing, the channels you subscribe to is another. I have about 10 channels besides the official and semi-official Ubuntu channels. Not to mention, the future of package managers is software like Smart which can already mix and match RPM and DEB repositories/channels. The few packages that aren't available in channels can be installed by double-clicking just like in Linux/Windows. The only software that needs compilation these days is completely green alpha software or development versions.
Kind of painting all distros with the same brush aren't you? Not all have terrible installers, for near one click ubuntu is pretty much there. For a nice guided install mandriva (pka mandrake) is good etc. Also any linux install I've done was quicker than windows XP. For me speed of install is much more important than being super easy. I have no idea why you think the windows installer has "set the bar", you have to click quite a few times randomly throughout the install and it takes a loooong time (I just did windows and ubuntu yesterday so I definitely know which is quicker).I have had no prolbems with the nvidia drivers on recent cards (my current desktop card being a lowend 6600). I don't know what you are talking about when it comes to filesystems. Most use ext3 as default and it works fine for your average user, if it doesn't work for you then choose one of the many other ones you can install (reiserfs, jfs are the first ones that come to mind). As simonGray noted: you are not limited to just the repos/channells your distro comes with. Package managers have more advantages than disadvantages. If you are worried about your app not being distributed, then just package it so it can be installed by a user (.deb, rpm etc). If you want updates to be automatic then setup a repo of your own (a-la skype).
@ogarro: Why not use bugzilla.gnome.org? Although we might include such a menu option in the next GNOME release. If all apps agree, everything can be done in time, no drawbacks, etc ;)Biggest drawback is that some things get reported over and over again. It is far better to have people who can fix the stuff (and layout/typos/etc are usually pretty easy to fix). Do not want such a option to overload the developers because too many duplicate bugs are filed per day. Even currently there is a very high chance a new bugreport is a duplicate.
It isn't.Dapper is a long term supported version in which software doesn't get new major versions. 2.16 will be or is already in Ubuntu Edgy Eft, that will be released in October.
