techcrunch.com — Good thing Gmail is out of beta. It is now the third largest Web mail service in the U.S. In July, Gmail nudged past AOL Email with 37 million unique visitors compared to 36.4 million for AOL, according to comScore estimates.

Gmail's conversations seem to be a stepping stone to Wave, which have a similar format.

I know several people who generally hate their AOL mail service, but keep it because they are afraid someone with an important e-mail message might not be able to find them if they switch to something better. Of course these same people have no qualms about switching their physical address and know fully well the will still get their mail and not appear to disappear from the face of the earth. It's a very strange attitude. In the world of marketing there is a "rule" that being the first to do something is the most important way to achieve success. AOL is proof of the validity of this rule. They can't chase their users away no matter how hard they try. Of course this rule was completely broken when it comes to Internet search. Yahoo should own it, but they got stupid and greedy and let Google steal it away.

its funny that you say that, AOL still has their old customers that do not use their dial-up services any longer, and they STILL pay for AOL simply as an e-mail service. it took me many hours on the customer service hotline to get them to cancel the payments. in the end i had to file a complaint with the credit card company to get my money back and stop the payments. I did all of this for my mother, when i found out she payed for email i was angry and set her up a G mail account.

I live in a rural area and I get faster cable internet than I did when I lived in Dallas, TX. Twice as fast for twice as cheap.
