techcrunch.com — Gmail users are reporting that all of their emails and contacts are being auto deleted. This may be a security flaw around use of Firefox 2.0. Google’s official policy is that once emails are deleted, they are gone forever. And based on the Google Groups thread, no one has been able to have their Gmail accounts restored to pre-deletion status.

Here's a how-to on backing up your Gmail...Use an email client for POP3 access and set Gmail to archive (or just leave) your emails accessed with POP3.Backup local email store.Done.Real tough.

@Dimitrk, keep in mind that people also often access their gmail from a public terminal... Hmm well I guess there's a lesson to be learned here.

I'm using Firefox 2.0 with Gmail and there is no problem. This is a campaign to smear the reputation of both.

"Or just automatically forward all your email to another account like Yahoo. Then at least you have them in two places."Actually, I just autoforward and delete from Gmail.

Well I have to give credit where credit is due, eight days after having my account hacked and deleted, Google recreated my account and restored just about all of my data. The only thing they missed was my Google reader feeds but who cares, I got my mail back.I can see now that before my account was deleted, the a-holes placed two orders at NameCheap with my checkout account. But I have their user names so I'll see if NameCheap will be cool about this and refund the orders. Thanks Google
