telegraph.co.uk — Drawn from the official temperature records of the Climate Research Unit at the University of East Anglia, that for the years 1998-2005 global average temperature did not increase (there was actually a slight decrease, though not at a rate that differs significantly from zero).

This opinion piece (from the right-wing Telegraph) is the work of a hack. The author cherry-picks data (the usual contrarian tactic). But this time, he's doing it to "prove a point"! Look at the actual data he cites, but fails to show:<a class="user" href="http://scienceblogs.com/deltoid/2006/04/a_picture_is_worth_a_thousand.php">http://scienceblogs.com/deltoid/2006/04/a_picture_is_worth_a_thousand.php</a>(Then tell me what makes more sense: judging global warming based on some random set of cherry-picked years, or looking at the trend since humanity started pumping vast quantities of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere, a process which has been clearly shown in the laboratory to cause warming.)

Unfortunately I did not make the number up. My environmental science professor threw the number out, I didn't verify it until you questioned it right now. I did a little research and found this from NASA.<a class="user" href="http://www.gsfc.nasa.gov/gsfc/service/gallery/fact_sheets/earthsci/terra/changing_land_surface.htm">http://www.gsfc.nasa.gov/gsfc/service/gallery/fact_sheets/earthsci/terra/changing_land_surface.htm</a>

dude, if you're still reading this thread, that was a quote from the article. The point of the article is how the media can whip people into a frenzy. Global climate was just the example used. So all I can say is read the article and when you reply do so in a manner that makes you seem as smart as you want to sound. STFU is hardly an appropriate rebuttal.

I find no compelling scientific evidence that global warming is caused by anything other than ordinary, natural climatic cycles. This single sentence infuriates the environmental wackos, because........ It's the truth.Glenn Environmental Chemist

"Consider the simple fact, drawn from the official temperature records of the Climate Research Unit at the University of East Anglia, that for the years 1998-2005 global average temperature did not increase" ... for once, good news after all -- makes for but one more thing to keep a background watch for, just in case the incoming data starts to change or the data gets scientifically discredited, but gladly not as much to worry about in the near future ...
