zmag.org — Why should large oil companies like the US based Chevron, the Malaysian Petronas, South Korea's Daewoo International Corp or the French Total continue to be involved in Burma without facing penalties for their support of one of the world?s most heinous dictatorships?

Thanks so much for the post and for the enlightenment. Not different from what is happening is Africa. Have you heard the old story about "POVERTY" "HIV/AIDS" "DICTATORS" "BAD GOVERNANCE" etc.. It's the same callous hypocrisy of the west. Poverty is big Business for both the dictators and the west. HIV/AIDS is big business for the western pharmaceutical companies. Dictators are well supported and backed by western governments Two example " France and Belgium". Bad Governance is well encouraged and backed by the west so that they will have easy access to the unending natural resources of Africa. I am sick and tired of all the propaganda. Sending 60billions Dollars worth of s**t aid to Africa. wait a second let me ask. 60 billion dollars more to the dictators or to Africans?. Tax payers of the west. pls.. tell your governments to do something better with this money in your various home countries. all we need in Africa is equal fair trade. thanks.

You don't realize how stupid a comment that is. You see a couple of years ago America was on the top, we had pretty booming economy and we called most of the shots, everyone's economy depended on us. But there's been a turn of events, and the Euro has become the currency that many countries are dealing in, and as you already know American jobs are going out the door to other countries. The value of the average American human life is slipping, unemployment rates and a lack of involvement in the production of most of the goods we consume means that in time we could just as easily be the "them" that you talk about, wouldn't you want someone to care about the fact that you may have to work in horrible conditions and are governed by a totalitarian government hellbent on crushing opposition?

So who is profiting if the US and other multinationals only have a small role in Burma (10% or less) and the Russians and Chinese have the lion's (or shall we say the Dragon's and Bear's share) share of the economic trade and investment of around 90%? Me thinks most of the comments are off target blaming the West and the rest of the world who have little or no investment and certainly no influence in Burma. And ranting about the US is of no relevance to the situation in Burma, unless you are saying yet again, since no one else will do it, the US must come to the aide of the People of Burma. No one is complaining about the corrupt and self serving military dictatorship there which seeks only to enrich itself and its leaders at the expense of their country and countrymen. Is that because the complainers are afraid of China and Russia? And so, will not say anything against them? Or are China and Russia their favorite allies (leftists)? And therefore, cannot be impugned?

No the article title is incorrect, it ought to read "Russian and Chinese Hypocrisy in Burma" for not trying to stop the dictatorship with their enormous investments and influence there (Communist military dictatorship in Burma). Hmmmm, I wonder why that might be? The real hypocrites are Russia and China since they are the ones with the majority investments in Burma. They are the ones making the most profit there.
