news.com.com — A teenager at a Pennsylvania school gets caught handing out business cards with instructions on how to circumvent his school's Web filter. But instead of throwing the school discipline book at him, administrators offer a choice: They'll give him a break if he lets the school's tech people know how he beat the system.

I'm in a bunch of computer classes and they have web sense on their computers, the database that they use is filled with sites that should be in there (ex porn) and also filled with sites that are useful to those interested in programming and web design.I've been working on a site and want to go on the net to look up a tag or a function and cant get the answer that i need because it is blocked by some type of category. Even my web site is blocked for "Proxy Avoidance" (sort of admin didn't do it right, i can still get there just take the WWW. off :-) ) when there isn't a proxy and there never has been a proxy on there. These filters hurt the computer science/tech student more than they help.plus if i want to i can get around it any time by remote desktoping into my home computer and using that instead of the schools (useful if you forget a file)

The broader definition of 'hack' is to use technologies in ways not originally intended, usually with an element of unobviousness. The simplest hacks, though, usually just involve knowing how things really work (as opposed to how they are presented to work to the layman user).

Crap... Man I missed out. My High School didn't have computers...

I REALLY resent the fact that they decided to to use this article to talk about Self Injury (or Self Mutilation). As a former self-injurer I think this is crap. I highly doubt that a large amount of kids are bypassing filters to check out self injury sites. More likely kids are using filters to get to MySpace, YouTube, and other gamming, or social networking sites. If nothing else a self injurer will check out self injury sites at home and not at school, it is not like that is the only motivation for bypassing school filters. I also resent the fact that at least by this article it suggests that self injury sites are pro-self injury. And that is simply not the case and there are definetly great resources online for getting help, and support for stopping this kind of activity. I resent the fact that they use this as a scare tactic. And also they omit "Pro-ANA" (Pro-Anorexia) sites which have been around much longer than self injury sites and outright encourage mostly girls to be anorexic and offers support and tips to that end. If they want to write about Self Injury sites that is fine, but at least don't spin it into an article on a unrelated issue.

"I mean seriously. My school blocks wikipedia... that's total BS."Well Wikipedia blocks my school! (They don't allow the school's IP to edit pages, even if you are logged in. This is a legitimate use for a proxy.)

why should only port 80 be allowd? what about checking email or using an ftp server? (ok, i know ftp is insecure and has no point, but it's what my school uses for their site)

lol that's why you change the name of the shortcut and the icon for it. I prefer the wordpad document just to make it unsuspecting.

Our school used to run a lockdown program on Win98SE. It disabled us from seeing the control panel icon, My Computer, C:/, and any "unpermitted drives". Problem was that with Win98, all you had to do was type "Control panel" in the address bar and voila you could get to it. I can still remember watching the look on my teacher's face when I changed the background. I was the 1337 haxxor for sure /sarc

REmote desktop with it disabled on start menu... It is on our computers too. Screw that. Try these links -- <a class="user" href="http://andyplace.com/tsweb">http://andyplace.com/tsweb</a>or <a class="user" href="http://andyplace.com:82/tsweb">http://andyplace.com:82/tsweb</a>This page has a blank were you can put in your machine's IP and you can do remote desktop at school as long as they don't block port 3389. I use this at my school to check email and to IM global friends.

Hi Guys, glad I joined this site. While the majority of you sound very skilled and really know your stuff, can you guys recommend a book to a newb just getting into this. I guess the essentials about networking, tcp/ip, ports etc. Something that would give me the basic understanding to go about and try this out on my own? Very much appreciated.

Schools are notoriously crap at securing their networks and computers. They never seem to block anything properly. My school blocked command line, but you can still run .bats, you can get admin access easily (if you know how :P) and basically just do whatever you want. The only smart thing they did was make their own proxy server that you have to use otherwise you cant connect to anything (Well, thats what they think) and made it that the proxy also acts as a blocker.I currently have 1 admin account, 1 local admin account, half of an EX staff members password (And the last 3 digits that i need are only numbers so the rest will be easy :P) whose account they haven't deleted (My sisters account from 3 years ago is still on there lol, and yeah.Fun times.

OMG, all of you guys seem to be so knowledgeables about hacking and all this is stuff.I'm currently attending High School and I'm taking a Networking class in the evenings, I love that class and when I grow up I just wanna be able to tell stories and experiences as the ones I just read on this blog.I'm really interested on the one regarding the ZANGLE program since my school uses the same thing to manage everything about students like grades, attendance, behavior and all that. For obvious reasons I want to crack into the system to do some profitable biz if I can.Thank you all for sharing such amazing and great stories, they've really inspired me.

A while ago i taught my friend to set a bios password on school PC and I watched1 min later the nosey admin walked into the room so only the supervisor password is set but not enough time 4 the user passwordShame as if i could set a user password they would need to wipe the bios or find a backdoor passwordjust enter the bios setup program by pressing an f-key or delete (depending on PC)Set a supervisor password then set a user password then "Save and Exit"BTW don't try this

I remember when i got into high school and began to think about the possibilities of getting into the network. So i looked around a bit to see what was blocked etc. and saw notepad was available so before you know it i was net sending, getting admin privilages etc. I told one of my friends how to net send and the wild card technique to send it every where on the network - he did it and got caught. One of the IT teachers came down and asked my friend to show him how he did it. To this my friend replied 'OK then' he got a few things wrong because he had only just learnt it and i was dying to but in but refrained because that would get me busted. He showed the administrator and he proceeded to restrict notepad, but i still bring some batch files to school on my memory stick to get command promt back on etc. Im now one year away from graduating from high school and i have done a few things in my time. Like getting in to the teacher training dates and swaping some around to cause confusion, changed grades for a small amount of cash, bribed myself out of a 30 minute detention (by threatening to delete the contents of the teachers logon and publishing mark schemes arcoss the school). And just the other day this kid was annoying me because he was using a proxy to get on youtube and he called that hacking, he was chatting s**t about how good he was with a pc etc so bang there goes his my documents folder (lol evil!). The day i graduate im just gonna delete everything off the server some thing i have been dying to do all year but refrained - that can be my leavers day act. (ps did i mention i havent been caught yet, lol)
