green.msn.com — When you first start hypermiling, I find, you really wish you had someone to ride along with you to show you the ropes. Sadly, that's not yet an option for most people. Until then, we can learn from some of the best.

W5 - Who, What, Where, When, How. The basics of professional journalism. Sadly, not applied in tripe opinion pieces like this. I would be interested in a real examination of the techniques - the benefits, the applications to standard vehicles, the RISKS associated with these tactics (ie. ridiculous slip-streaming techniques, shutting off engines reducing power to braking and safety systems, dead-sticking into a turn off the highway and coasting into traffic etc.). I have seen other articles on this topic but they always seem to be by fanboys and never a proper analysis - pros and cons and implications etc.

Yeah but people who wait to get right up to the red light before stopping from 60mph are the most stupid; if you coast up to it at 30, you'll be at 30mph when it turns green instead of 0.

I drove 5 people before in my Prius, that is 5*55mpg or 275 mpg total for all the people. That is over 2 times better than those same 5 people each driving alone in a one seat car.Driving 50 people in a bus at 8mpg will get 400mpg for all the people, or almost 4 times better than super efficient little cars. Wouldn't it be better to just car pool and go the same speed as everyone else?
