As ridiculous as this seems to me now, it sure would have helped out back when i was in school and skipped doing homework so i could go to work and help pay the bills. It's not right or fair or ideal, but for a number of kids, the choice isn't "stay in school, get a job" it's stay in school OR get a job.... From the article, it seems that students were chosen at least in part based on income: "the students chosen for the program were picked by school staff, based on attendance, grades, test scores and free or reduced lunch status"
