news.yahoo.com — ATLANTA - Georgia is poised to introduce two literature classes on the Bible in public schools next year, a move analysts say would make the state the first to take an explicit stance endorsing ? and funding ? biblical teachings.

@magnetowasright"But, it's not about teaching religion at all. It's about teaching English literature, and no other major theological work would've been worth focusing on for a year in that context."But...but...how can a collection of books that were written in ancient Aramaic, a dead and lost language today, be considered English literature? Just because many people have attempted different and totally contradictory translations into English, does not make it 'English literature'. If it did, then everything available in English would be considered English literature. Sounds like typical British imperialism!

Wonder if they "teach" them the whole Bible? I doubt it.... I mean I'm sure "teaching" kids this is a great idea:Kings, 2:23-24.23: And he (Elisha) went up from thence unto Bethel: and as he was going up by the way, there came forth little children out of the city, and mocked him, and said unto him, Go up, thou bald head; go up, thou bald head. 24: And he turned back, and looked on them, and cursed them in the name of the Lord. And there came forth two she bears out of the wood, and tare forty and two children of them."Nice.... I love the bible, such a loving book :(

Well, looks to me like there is no problem here. Lets go to my old pal the US Constitution:"Congress shall make NO law respecting an establishment of relegion, or prohibiting the free excersize therof,...." I am not a Christian but I think its super important to read the bible and understand it if you want to understand the impact it has had on this society. If people in Georgia want the children in that state to learn something in school than thats fine, the people decide what the kids learn, so don't whine if its not your belief.

Ever read "God: A Biography?" It takes a good, long look at the Hebrew Bible from the "literature" angle - specifically, its protagonist. Fascinating stuff, really.

@duffydirectYou sounded like a reasonable, nice guy until the completely unfounded argument that mathematicians and engineers are immoral and will turn their talents towards evil the moment religion is gone. I don't need to rehash the evils committed in human history over differences in religion, and have you ever considered that there are sources of morality outside of faith? And being a member of western society (or being an American) is absolutely not about bible literacy (though it's a plus) nor admiring paintings by old dead guys in a museum. The western world today is first and foremost shaped by freedom, democracy, and capitalism -- 3 concepts completely contradictory to the Judeo-Christian teachings. Its amazing how the American constitution and economy can give this country so much strength and yet people still deny its influence and credit Christianity as the cornerstone of western civilization.
