i think everybody is missing the point. the civilian force isn't policing civilians, it's a group made of civilians helping with national security, such as the peace corps.
You should look into the dirty politics surrounding the passage of the patriot act. Republicans used the deaths of 3000 Americans over and over to push through draconian police state tactics. They accused Viet Nam Vet and paraplegic Max Clelland of being unpatriotic - and he lost his seat to a chickenhawk! -- because Republicans used their typical lying, low-down gutter tactics to get their way - because they only win by feeding fear. Matt Tiabbi's "Worse Congress Ever" provides some interesting facts about the way Bush and his majority republican Congress ruled. That article is available online. I agree that Congress should have hit back, hard. Bush, imo, should be awaiting trial as a war criminal. Rove and others should be in jail for refusing to honor subpoenas to testify before Congress. We have NEVER had a private military firm that had the right to engage in police actions or actions of state on U.S. soil before Bush. Oh, and this private military firm is not just comprised of Americans. Prince also has former henchmen from Pinochet's dictatorship, racists who previously worked in/originated in Rhodesia and apartheid South Africa -- in other words, this far right force is made up of people whose views have been repudiated around the world - and even here, tho not by the likes of Dick Cheney. I'm from the south (and white, fwiw) and I'm well aware of social conservatives - and the idiot spewing this nonsense down in GA is using a "dog whistle" to call all the racists home. I lived the first 20 years of my life around these same brain dead idiots. Their influence in the south is the main reason I and many others would never choose to live there. Their influence is why the economies of the south suffer brain drain. Their influence is why the south continues to look and act like the zippy the pinhead of American life.
