"5. Never use a foreign phrase, a scientific word, or a jargon word if you can think of an everyday English equivalent."David Foster Wallace breaks this rule all the time and he's still a damn good writer!
Chekov agreed with Orwell on one thing: cut! Cut! Cut!Many other great writers gave the same advice. He put it this way among others: take one year to write a book, and then spend six months cutting. And only write about what you really know.
George also enjoyed placing his children in colleges and universities, reading their books, and writing their term papers. He enjoyed submitting transcripts and resumes for them for jobs... I understand, I used to write term papers for a term paper service..."Down and Out in Paris and London" was my favorite book he wrote. It ought to have a few new chapters.

It is really worth reading the entire article "Politics and the English Language". When I read it at first, I didn't know who wrote it or when, I thought it was contemporary! Soon after I realized it was written 50 years ago but is just as valid today as it was back then.http://www.mtholyoke.edu/acad/intrel/orwell46.htm

Shakespeare loved the words of Montaigne and it showed. I am happy he did not follow this advice.
