chaparyan.com — "Save the planet, we don't even know how to take care of ourselves yet. We haven't learned how to care for one another, we're gonna save the f*&king planet?" - George Carlin. He just knocks it out of the park with this one.

remember the 70s when people like you said an ice age was moments away? Ever hear of evolution. A warm wet planet is great for life everywhere. Its what all life on this planet thrives on.

I agree. But not only should we not mess it up to save it for ourselves. We should make sure our greed does no kill of Species of animals and plants. ei http://www.sierraclub.org/ca/sequoia/Monument/ check this site out trying to save trees that are 2200 + years old. A federal judge ruled that the Bush administration's controversial plan to allow commercial logging in Giant Sequoia National Monument Conservation is illegal. You would think no one would consider cutting these down but guess again. So sure we can't save the planet but we can and have killed of some amazing species in the small epoch of time we have existed. I am sure people would think collecting the eggs of rare birds also crazy. http://www.eurekalert.org/pub_releases/2006-11/plos-aht112106.php . Anyway Carlin is funny but he even knows that he is not to be taken seriously on everything. On Another note when the planet had higher concentration of oxygen before dinosaurs we used to have super giant insects like 2 feet wide spiders and centipedes that were like 6 feet long (I think) . So it does amaze me what evolution has and has not done in the past, and when people talk about what would be the next big thing for mankind to get into when comparing it to space and computers and the industrial age I think genetic research is the answer. I would guess that the human species will start mutating (over a long period of time and voluntarily of course) and start spreading to more parts of our planet or outer space Imagine in the next 1000 years some people may decide to start mutating to live under water or maybe change their genetic make up to live off of less oxygen. I am just typing this as it comes to me so not much thought of design or consequence just an old "just imagine"

George Carlin is a comedian. What he says is designed to get a rise out of people. I find his comedy appealing because of his ability to transcend all this trendy horse s**t and communicate with people on a humanistic level. He isn't selling anything, he's tearing down ridiculous schools of thought and over-inflated self importance. If you look at this diatribe in context with his massive body of work then maybe you'll understand his schtick a bit more. Frankly, I don't give a s**t whether you like what he does or not. Furthermore, I don't give a s**t if you respect my opinion. Do you take everything an entertainer says at face value and get your panties in a wad when it hits a nerve? You're getting all bent out of shape over a guy who does jokes about moths farting and Margaret Thatcher wearing a strap on. If this isn't your bag, move on, but I'd highly suggest lightening the f**k up. He's not pretending to be an authority on environmentalism. He's just got a good bulls**t detector. Check out Bill Hicks. If George bothers you then he'll give you nightmares.

I'm in agreement that Carlin is a comic genius. I'm also in agreement with Carlin about a number of points he raises in this dialogue: namely that humans are endangering our own wellbeing more than that of the the planet as a whole. Maybe it is our 'higher purpose' to pump the environment full of synthetic polymers before we go extinct. But oh, that comic cynicism - that inner vacuum filled with the bitterness of self-assured criticism - misses something. I for one am glad that there is a growing concern about the impact we are having, as a species, on the biosphere. True, the hypocrisy of the so-called "green" mega-consumer deserves to be exposed for what it is. But I'm not willing to jump on the band wagon of lumping all those concerned about the state of the biosphere into the category of "spoiled, selfish little rich f**ker who wants clean drinking water".

Keep in mind that this routine was written quite a while back. As far back as the late 80s even. All the Global Warming information wasn't as public back then. Back then environmentalists were more the birkenstock wearing hippie crowd that were much more easy to make fun of with their Save the Whales slogans. Hence the birth of this routine.

I use to find Carlin funny, but for the past, maybe, 5 years or so I just can't get into any of his stuff. I have not yet RTFA so I can't really comment on this one, will check it out later. I'm just not anticipating a high presence of funny.
