geni.com— Interesting "social" genealogy site, lets you build a tree and add relatives who can edit and complete their sides of your family tree using a Flash UI.

It is a shame about the lack of security on this site. I had started a tree and invited a few relatives, but ended up emailing them again telling them to forget about it. Fix the security holes and scale it so it can handle the digg effect and me and my whole family will jump on board, until then, no thanks.Been looking through the links I found off of the wiki entry for GEDCOM. There are some decent ones there, but not sure which is the best. Anyone with any experience on them?
yeah, i did the same thing...sometimes there are parts you wanna leave alone if someone's divorced, etc. i made that mistake...puckering up waiting for a phone call from my uncle right now :)
This is great web site. I have added 209 relatives in one day (with help of my grandmother) and I've invited my brothers and uncles to continue building tree from their sides. Awesome!
Sorry, but there's a lot more to genealogy than pretty pictures and adding people's email addresses. This site has a long way to go before being a serious genealogy site along the likes of ancestry.com, Legacy family tree software, Family Tree Maker, etc. This is more like some sort of hybrid gene/social networking site where people think that they will like each other because they are related rather than just friends.I would advise nobody to use this until they offer full GEDCOM import/export support at the least, so that you can reuse your time investment entering data on the site (and this holds true for any genealogy program).
I started a tree in the beginning of April 2007. As soon as I began adding members to the tree, one of my cousins accepted an invite and helped me fill in some of the gaps. You can read more about my story at http://blog.opensourceopportunities.com/2007/03/web-20-and-family-networks.htmlRegarding identity theft, I wouldn't be concerned too much with a social networking site such as Geni.com, which keeps all of your private data available only to members of your tree. The bottom line is this: Every transaction you make goes through the Internet, even if you don't own a computer. If you buy groceries using your debit card, you've just submitted your personal data through the Internet. Buying gas at the pump with a credit card? Same situation, your transaction is handled via the Internet. Don' t let the fear of identity theft stop you from taking advantage of the services that Geni provides! Before banning Geni, I would be more inclined to blacklist MySpace. Whenever I log on to MySpace, my security software goes bananas, flagging all of the banner ads and trick advertising as a "dangerous website". At least Geni has taken the Google approach and places non-intrusive ads on their pages.
The only problem with Geni is that it doesn't yet allow importing gedcom files. That's a rather essential feature as when you share with other family members you HAVE to be able to import. I see in their help section that this is a planned feature, but until it's implemented I'll have to stick with something else. For real genealogy work though, Legacy Family Tree is the ONLY good software out there. Geni is a nice idea for sharing, but leaves out all the citations and other data that is necessary with real research.
Amazing site! I never really got into genealogy before, but this site makes it fun. Very easy to use, and you can have your immediate family set up in minutes.
I have gone over the suggestions here during the past year on Web 2.0 for Genealogy.I don't consider them as Web 2.0 on the basis some may charge fees and all are not public.By far and away the site to consider for genealogy ishttp://wc.rootsweb.com

Great site. Easy to use. They should beef up security, though.

If you're interested in more content, check out http://www.LivingGenealogy.com - no gedcom's yet, but its very "genealogy 2.0-esque" and focuses on the rich media and stories behind genealogy.

The Facebook of family tree software. An intuitive and fun, uncluttered and enjoyable experience.
