I grew up never going to church or really believing in a god, it was more or less "There is a god, he's up there, but you don't need to go to church or anything to believe." So here I am now, an atheist for a couple of years (I'm 16)
2 things: A) We have a freedom of religion in the US. This is freedom from a forced religion and to choose our own belief structure. B) Innagadadavida, we also have a freedom of speech, which means that we can say whatever we want! You do not have a Freedom to not be offended. If everyone always agreed with each other YOU WOULDN'T NEED A FREEDOM OF SPEECH! You do have a freedom of association...so if you don't want to be around someone, get away from them. Sometimes what gets said isn't pretty, sometimes it offends, sometimes the truth is racist and sometimes stereotypes are right. To police the thoughts and actions of those that may offend someone is saying those who may be offended are children, meaning "they can not live with freedoms!"
I actually have that book, "The God Gene". I have only read the first two chapters before school work took priority but now since summer is here, I should be finishing it up.
Umm, no.I didn't say we should modify people to believe what WE want them to. I said we COULD modify them so that they would be less likely to believe what any over-zealous assh**e tries to pound into their head. And I also said it was dangerous territory either way.

Psa 53:1 .... The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God. Corrupt are they, and have done abominable iniquity: there is none that doeth good.
