Linguistics my friend. Study a bit and you'll be surprised. Words are an organic part of human culture, they're not something we chose to name anything, -no- the words themselves contain part of the description. Those who created/made popular the characterization geek and/or nerd obviously used those words in a negative light, in the same way that they did those who created the terms jocks, goths, etc, etc. This kind of simplification of language also denotes a simplification of the concept described. If a geek is a four letter-one syllable word then he/she is an easily describable (therefore simple) concept, a.k.a. a simpleton. That's how your "enemies" want you to be (a simpleton), that's how they will describe you. For example there are the Yanks, instead of Yankees, Japs instead of Japanese, easily pronounced therefore easily understood concepts (simple ones). When someone calls "you" a geek (s)he makes a claim that (s)he instantly knows everything about "you", things (s)he couldn't possibly know under normal circumstances. If "you" play along then "you" just confirm his/her bias, a stupid think to do if "you"'re more complex than that...

Geeks on the left, nerds on the right. The screenshot is from LibraryThing's tagmash tool, it compares relationships between tags that the members on the site have used, the minuses exclude that tag from the tagmash.More detailed explanation and source at: <a class="user" href="http://www.librarything.com/blog/2009/09/geeks-vs-nerds-hard-data.php" rel="nofollow">http://www.librarything.com/blog/2009/09/geeks-vs- ...</a>
