lifehacker.com — Free, open source software called Jinzora puts a slick, web-based media player frontend on your web server. With Jinzora installed on your home server, you can browse your music library, create playlists on the fly and stream your music over the internet from your home computer or internet-enabled handheld from anywhere.

Currently, $45 for 7mb down, ~500kb up. So yes, the upload speed sucks ass.

I tried Jinzora and ended up using Ampache. Light weight and fast page loads. Manages DB easily too...ampache.org

I really like the wimpy player... it's not free/or open source, but well worth the $30. http://www.wimpyplayer.com/

I was using gnump3d for several years and just switched to ampache, but I really miss the directory oriented browsing of gnump3d. All my music has proper tags, but it's really difficult to locate albums sometimes. Especially when you have a lot of loose tracks. Does Jinzora have any sort of directory browsing mode?

Here in Japan, however, it's feasible, as I'm on 100Mb fiber. However, I would see this as more useful on a home network rather than over the internet; it's easier to just take my iPod with me, or my laptop. If I want to share with friends on a communal server, that would be cool, but then I have to get around my NAT and figure out what my actual IP address is.

Does anyone know of a program that will allow me to play the same music from multiple computers throughout the house, and have the music synced? So if you walked from upstairs to downstairs you would hear the same song, same beat.
