dvice.com — The Garmin Forerunner line of GPS-enabled watches just took a giant leap in techno-goodness. If you?re a runner or walker, you're going to like the way this new Forerunner 405 ($300) measures and records your speed, distance, elevation and even heart rate.

You've been brainwashed by GQ and Esquire into thinking that. Do you wear cufflinks? Top Hat and cane too?Bet you drive a BMW, use Axe Deoderant, wear Timberlands and Diesel jeans too? Armani cologne, with the entire Sephora for Men's collection in your bathroom?

They had a few available at the Boston Marathon expo this past weekend. I was actually glad that I bought a 305 instead. The 405 is smaller, but really not THAT much smaller. Also the round face actually seemed like it would be harder to read if you like to display 4 fields of real time data like I do.

No kidding. As a runner and cyclist, I have been looking for a watch like this. Right now I have a HRM and a watch for interval training, but nothing that does BOTH, combined with the functionality of a GPS. This would allow me to replace both of these watches a single watch and get added functionality. The article is slightly inaccurate in that the watch alone is $300, but with the Telemetry strap, you add $50 to the cost. Still, not a bad price all things considered.

When is this going to be available in stores?

If you're interested in developing software for the wireless sensors, use your favorite search engine to look for "ANT dev kit". The dongle is recognized as a USB to serial adapter in the latest Linux kernels (cp2101 driver). The dev kit comes with a CD with sample code. I've got one at a trade show and I'm going to try to port it.

So, it might be usable after couple of months of coding if your other expectations are met, great! :)It seems that 305 support had last update 10 weeks ago and commented like this: "Hopefully this should make it work with a Forerunner 305. ". future OS X support isn't very interesting for me, i think people using commercial OS deserve all the punishment, unfortunately it's the rest who are getting it.
