joystiq.com— As Australian Veterinary Association President Kersti Seksel told the Sydney Morning Herald, today's kids "interact more by playing computer games and less by going out there and throwing the ball to a dog."

@Stevethelame:I don't know what kind of crack they have in your neighborhood, but a pet is most certainly NOT for entertainment...and anyone who treats one as such does not deserve a pet. It's hollow and irresponsible. And FYI...dog were originally, and in many cases today, kept to protect the home and whatnot. Their constant presence in a house often deters common insects and rodents from invading and recent finds show that their presence puts their owners at greater comfort and petting them serves as stress relief - in companionship...not entertainment.Now...granted, I've watched my dog chase it's tail or a reflection from my watch or marveled at how my dog figured out how to open door knobs and found amusement in her process and attempts...but that's like saying I have a child for entertainment just because I enjoy watching them learn about the world.So...stevethelame - you are an insensitive chud
Again another person that assumes Correlation == Causation. While sure this could be a factor there is no reason that people cant do both as the article implies. There are numerous other reasons why it could be in decline. For instance dogs need to be taken for walks frequently if you just don't have the time to do that whether it be because of work/school or social reasons you probably shouldn't own one.
"As if animals are only born into existence to be pets."Domesticated animals are. They would have a very rough time trying to make their way in the wild. Not saying it's impossible for them to survive, but a Jack Russel Terrier is a pansy next to a wolf.
All problems in the world are caused by games. Hitler invade Poland? Blame Civilization. An old man stuck his car in a light pole? Blame GT4. Bin Laden throw 2 air planes in the WTC? Blame Flight Simulator.
So I should get a dog that I will get bored of and then forget to feed? (Okay, I really do own a dog and I don't forget to feed him or play with him etc.)Surely the adverts "a dog's not just for Christmas" did more here?

It sounds like a society's ills is defined as anything that causes your disposable income to decline.
