"I love how people say the UI is ugly and old. You know, some people don't like programs that are all graphical and a waste of resources. This program is so simple its perfect. I want to chat to people with people regardless of the protocol they use. Gaim allows that and you know what, the only way I can tell they are on another protocol is by the icon it uses for each protocol. It supports tabs, all the formatting for each window can be the same, so text is the same for every conversation.People bitch and complain about the looks of this thing, it is funny. If you like programs with pretty colors, this is not for you and it probably never will be. Use Trillian or those other cute little programs that do things less effectively. Gaim is the best multi-protocol client out there, it will always have this simple interface. It is fast and configurable and expandable with 3rd party plugins. If I can chat, send files and eventually voice chat, I will be so flippin happy."Your view is not the norm, though I do respect what you say. And if you don't believe me, then ask yourself why Microsoft (the leader in desktop operating systems) creates fancy GUI's for their applications. If users didn't want fancy, they wouldn't give them fancy.Kopete has a better looking UI (in addition to supporting more protocols than GAIM (read Jabber)), but IMHO, even Kopete is ugly. If you're an X Windows user there really aren't very many choices. And to many users, it's a disappointment when they all suffer from a poor UI design. For *nix users, Trillian isn't much of an option (I've tried running it with wine and had stability issues). It's unfortunate because if they could port Trillian exactly as it is for Windows, I'd gladly pay for it and run it on my Linux systems.
Hey everybody, keep complaing, I think it's helping!! Seriously, if you don't have anything good to say about gaim then either shut up or start contributing to the gaim project to make it do and/or look like you want. Gaim is the finest multi-protocol IM client around, especially considering it is a framework (i.e. it is lib-based and can be used in other programs as well). Sheesh, all I ever hear you people on digg do is complain. Give it a rest already.
Whoa... talk about some "beat you over the head" opinions.Simmer people, and remember that we all have different needs. I'm running a crappy old win98 laptop at the moment so I need a fast client, but one that can still do multiple services. GAIM is perfect for my needs. If you've got a bunch of RAM and you want to pretend you're Neo or somebody with a tricked out GUI then by all means please find a flashier client.

Whatever happened with Aimutation? Such a great project, they promises an update, and then they just disappeared. So sad.
