thinkprogress.org — Capably demonstrating Richard Cohen’s thesis that John McCain’s VP pick was an elaborate ruse to force conservatives to make fools of themselves, neocon activist Frank Gaffney takes up the “Alaska is close to Russia!” argument for Gov. Sarah Palin’s foreign policy experience:

You refer to "you liberals" in quite a derogatory way.We may have differing political opinions, but at least we are not so f**king brain dead as to actually believe the interminable stream of Bovine Faeces.

So, you are the one doofus who bought the "border with Russia" argument. Can you name a single instance that she had to deal with Russia? Do you seriously think she ever _had_ to deal with them? Don't fool yourself, she didn't even have a freaking passport until last year, and I am quite sure that if you ever ask her to talk about the situation in Darfur, Zimbabwe or Georgia she would give you a lot of talk about God and America and Liberty and no knowledge whatsoever about the specific issues themselves. Nothing personal, she might be a nice person after all, but she is just way outclassed for the position.

Which interminable stream of cow crap are we talking about here: Barack's blathering speeches or the incessant anti-Palin articles over the last 3 days here on Digg?

Human beings do not learn by osmosis. If we could, then just putting a book next to our head would be enough to get an education. Having contact with fishing trawlers from Russia, which is as close as she has gotten to Russia, does not mean she has foreign policy experience. When has she ever met with the leader or representative of another country? Never. How many times has she left North America? Once, to visit Alaskan National Guard troops in Kuwait, which did not involve meeting with ANYONE who is a representative from Kuwait. We don't have to admit anything that is not true, and just being close to another country does not in any way equate to foreign policy experience.

Asked what insight she had gained from living so close to Russia, she said: "They're our next-door neighbors and you can actually see Russia from land here in Alaska, from an island in Alaska."In the interview with CBS News anchor Katie Couric, Palin said: "It's funny that a comment like that was, kind of made to ... I don't know, you know? Reporters ..."Couric said, "Mock?""Yeah," Palin said, "mocked, I guess that's the word, yeah."When Couric asked how Alaska's closeness to Russia enhanced her foreign policy experience, Palin said, "Well, it certainly does because our ... our next-door neighbors are foreign countries." Alaska shares a border with Canada.Palin didn't answer directly when Couric inquired about whether she had been involved in any negotiations with the Russians."We have trade missions back and forth," she replied. As she continued, Palin brought up Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin."It's very important when you consider even national security issues with Russia as Putin rears his head and comes into the air space of the United States of America, where — where do they go? It's Alaska. It's just right over the border. It is — from Alaska that we send those out to make sure that an eye is being kept on this very powerful nation, Russia, because they are right there. They are right next to ... to our state," she said."No further comment
