linuxpowertop.org — According to a keynote given at OSCON, Intel's PowerTOP application has allowed developers to get a close-up view of what is sucking power in a GNU/Linux system. Apparently they've gotten so much feedback and patches that they've been able to extend battery life by an hour since the first release, making GNU/Linux the best OS for power saving.

@Noctem"Last I knew, I couldn't go to the nVidia website, download the drivers, double-click a file to install the drivers, and either reboot or restart X and have them just work. Has this changed?"With Ubuntu 7.04 there is supposed to be a "Restricted Drivers Manager" popping up after the first login, asking if you want to use the nVidia proprietary drivers. That should be much easier to use than to maunally download the drivers from the nVidia website. In addition, the Ubuntu package is probably customized to fit Ubuntu well, which is not the case with the generic nVidia package.Note: I run Fedora, not Ubuntu, so this is not first-hand knowledge.

I swear, I don't MIND Linux, I've tried some different distros, but I still can't see it supplanting Windoze or OS X on user desktops, possibly ever. I'm certainly not tossing out OS X on my Mac Pro tower anytime soon. So I get tired of all the yammering about Linux on Digg and elsewhere, and how wonderful it is. Until the front-end becomes REALLY user-friendly and reliable, it will remain a hobbyist's tool. (I'm talking corporate and consumer desktops, mind you. The server farm is a different environment, and those in charge of it are expected to be a lot more sophisticated.)OK - it's more power efficient. That won't convert a single Windoze or OS X desktop user, period. Again, perhaps large server farms could use the power savings, but a home desktop user isn't going to swap out his XP load to save a buck on his electric bill. Can we all just get real, please?

Install any operating system on a computer puts non tech people off, Install most any software puts non tech people off completely. In all honesty there is no technical reason why people would choose Windows over linux. The only reason people choose windows is because there is more crap for it ( Little dogs that run on your screen, and the like ) and it comes with their computer. If Linux wants to gain more market share they should focus on making the better operating enviroment, not winning over Ma and Pa with stupid gimmicks

"just because *YOU'RE* too f**king stupid to make it work..."that used to be the attitude (of the many) in the Windows world of software and hardware companies, guess what, they are dead (or got bought out at penny share price) due to customers saying FU back.IF the Linux devs and supporters want Linux to be mass market, it has to be easy for average joe to use, repair and install. The Windows self repairing of safe boot, even if limited but gets the machine back into a semi usable state, is priceless.

I agree. Linux is really power efficient. Its really a light weight OS that's prolly a really big reason why.
