It does not work for me either. I tried both IE and Firefox and created messages. There is a link from the calendar back to gmail, but not from gmail to the calendar.
Depending on when you got your Gmail, you will eventually be able to use Google CL2. When Gmail first added "WebClips" I didn't see them until a month or so after my friend who had been invited to gmail directly by an original gmail user, where i got invited by a third or fourth tier user.

Not everyone has it. I'm having the same issue - no access to Calendar from within Gmail when composing letter.

@abdulla all the new stuff only works if you have your language set to English (US) in settings.
