squash.wordpress.com — Google Chat could be a precursor to bigger things for GMail, possibly making it the centre of the user's universe, so that everything can be archived, tagged and search under a single system.Such a move makes the browser the OS and GMail your desktop.

Hrmm, is this article actually about anything? Doesn't really seem like it, seems like it's just a bunch of guesses that have been around forever.---------------------------------------------------http://fuh-q.com

And what about those of us who do not like webmail? I strongly prefer my mail in a speedy software application that needs no internet connection to be useful to me.

Webmail sucks. Gmail is webmail. Therefore, Gmail sucks.I have a few accounts and just use it to archive crap. When they start supporting IMAP I'll look again.Google is an advertising company, not a tech company.

"For most of the day, my Firefox browser is the only application I have open.....and it’s remarkable how little I find myself needing to hit the Start button anymore."So what your saying is you DONT have a JOB and you surf porn all day long. BUM!!!!

"People honestly thing switchers to Gmail switched back? I dont know any. Gmail is by far the best of the main web-based email services. Granted, some of the other stuff theyve done has been weak *cough* Google Video / Newsreader *cough*, but I cant see how anybody can front on Gmail."Yep. Me. I like gmail, dont get me wrong, but, I just have a problem with google knowing so much about me. Ya ya, tin foil hat, blah blah, but what about those people using gmail for work? The potential sensitive information or documents passing thru google? No thanks. Ill use my personal server.

To all the people who seem to think that gmail can only be viewed as web mail, go into gmail settings and enable pop access, now all you'll have to do is set up your favorite email client. Gmail even tells how to configure quite a few different programs. https://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?ctx=%67mail&hl=en&answer=12103

I'm tired of Kevin Rose b*tching and moaning about all things Google while extoling products that have the same issues he complains about. He wines about the resolution of Google Video, while saying YouTube looks great. And we get the point, you don't like the design of Google. But HE is missing the point. It is *specifically* designed that way, it wasn't a mistake. Some people don't like over bloated, resource intensive applicatiosn that look pretty, but perform like crap (*cough*itues*cough).

you know.... it's weird how so many people flame Gmail. if it wasn't for Gmail then you all will be still complaining about your 10Mb hotmail/ yahoo accounts.... hotmail/yahoo's ugly, slow interface.... and how much hotmail/ yahoo couldn't give a rat's ass about their users as long as there's not another alternative for you to run off to. Google has been pushing change, innovation, and open source for a few years now. MS and Yahoo just recently jumped on the bandwagon....
