Not much in this page. I love Phoronix, but this one is a predictable forecast with a very partial changelog. What will be interesting in 2.4 are the big UI changes. To those who have used it for years, such changes can lead to inconveniences.

It can most certainly improve and that effort seems to be coming along now. For a while progress went stale. Still 2.6 will be the tipping point, that's when they plan to merge in GEGL. Should be almost ready by the end of the year. The GEGL has been both the problem and the solution. Given it amounts to a total rewrite of core aspects of GIMP people have been tenuous about improving the current GIMP. Despite this the GEGL almost went the way of HURD, been in the works for a long time. If they finally get it done then we should see some real momentum post 2.6.

Care to name some examples of difficult basic tasks? My photo editing needs are quite basic, but when I used windows I used to use my warez'd copy of Photoshop. Now I use linux, and I use the GIMP. It took a few minutes to figure out what was where, but in terms of actual workflow, I don't really see much difference.

Photoshop is not easy. And everytime it releases a new version, it only increments the difficulty of using it. Most folks, don't need the tons of features that PS have, but this is okay. Since PS was designed for almost all types of users, so even if we don't need that feature, somebody out there will use that feature. However, I will use Gimp if needed, but my work relies heavily on Photoshop's CYMK feature. Ops, Its October, I am bit too late posting this...
