env.go.jp — No paper, no plastic, bring your own containers by learning to fold wrapping cloth to carry just about anything. When you are done, unlike traditional bags, you can fold it up with a small footprint. One simple step to reduce waste and combat global warming.

I agree about the wrapping, but the Japanese also user far less energy per capita than North Americans. They are also pretty good about recycling....

They normally ask you whether or not you want a bag when you buy something. Just like in the U.S. It's not just assumed. (At least in places like convenience stores.) I just tell them "Kekko desu" if I don't want one. It's not a big deal.

For several years I worked for a Japanese couple who owned a sushi bar. Atsuko the wife used to bring us Bento every night in tupper ware that she had wrapped in cloth just like in the illustrations. I never realized it was a Japanese technique for wrapping and carrying containers.

I saw Martha Stewart teach Conan O'Brien how to do that once, and I have never been able to replicate it as well as her or the woman in that video.
