I imagine that they still cause an oscillation of pressure through the surrounding medium, even if there isn't someone there to observe it. You could argue something based on Schrodinger's Cat, but we all know that experiment was bulls**t. The internet has taught us that cats have the ultimate frame of reference, so it's not whether the cat is dead or alive but rather whether everyone else is dead or alive.
