The problem with frightened CEO's is that they still have all the power - frightened armed people and mobs are usually only "talked down" after it's clear that their power is limited. Talking down mobs and armed people is great for the movies but seldom happens in real life - too often people take up arms or form mobs after all other avenues of hope are exhausted.

Frightened people are only dangerous to us, when we 'agree' that their fear impacts us.. and when we see ourselves as equal, it seems to be just another case of 'there, there... everything will work out for the best!". This is when we empower ourselves, ah la Ghandi's philosophy. Grown human's tantrums may be loud, but they are still just tantrum's.. so how graown are they really???

I've heard this too many times. This is our model and it works for us. Period. What do you do in this case? Thank them politely, turn around and leave... Right?

Most of us avoid what we don't understand. The ones who educate themselves tend to be the most successful. We watched the end of the newest reality show where large company CEOs go undercover for a week, working at the lowest levels of their companies incognito. The CEO of Waste Management was "fired" by his trash collecting supervisor for not moving fast enough. He learned, first hand, the impact of certain corporate mandates. Perhaps a correlation here is that when CEOs don't take the time to understand how communication channels to their customers are changing - fast, or the impact that messages have, they lose the connection with their business. While I tend to work with small start-ups who generally get the need for new marketing methods, it's the projects I take with large, established clients that tend to get the most frustrating do to stuck in the past practices. http://www.bethsmiller.com Keep it up, Seth. Your insights are always dead on.
