It appears that France is the only country that is actively fighting for personal privacy these days. In most other countries they are setting laws to evade it on grounds of "terrorism" or copyrights.They may be strange and smell bad... But I agree with France, for once :)
This is now civil liberties should be protected. Yes, they pay higher taxes but they are safer. The entire Europe is safer, people as entity are protected by law and not large conglomerates that have the rights as persons. It would seem that just such rights given to multinationals are what puzzles Washington as they treat them better than REAL PEOPLE.
The French are very liberal and have a deep sense of personal freedom. They have been this way for a long time. We could learn a thing or two from the French.
