"With Linspire, we had our Insider's program, which was great, because we could quietly test things. With Freespire being a community, open-for-all project, we can't have such a program, but that need still exists (to quietly test things on a smaller level before mass consumption). What we can do, however, is only announce it here, and ask others to keep this a little quiet until we've had a chance to polish things up a bit more. So, consider yourselves all duly appointed to the Freespire "Insider's" club, by just the fact you're hanging out in our forums and reading this. (I'm sure someone will spill this to some media sites, but maybe they'll respect our wishes to remain a little quiet on this for now as well? =)"Oops!!
OK, here's what's up!1) Ubuntu is good for noobs because of Automatix installing all their codecs.2) Windows is not good because a ton of spyware comes with all those codecs.3) Linspire is ok, but the legal issues probally prevent them from distributing codecs for free and they get docked money for it. I'm guessing freespire doesn't have any codecs.
Doubt it, ubuntu has something that linspire doesn't, a passionate community and a generous benefactor Linspire does have a passionate community and a generous benefactor...All the FUD about it sure gets old.
Of course. That's right. When Ubuntu does it. It's enlightened self interest. When Linspire does it. It's profiteering. That's where Linspire lost it. They never sent out those free CDs. Bad move on their part. Like the guy below said. Linspire is the lead sponsor for many open source projects. NVU, K3b, Kopete... Have you ever used any of those? This tactic actually gives something back to the Open Source community, but hey no one remembers money sent to developers so that they can spend time improving Open Source Software. Sending some one a CD does not give anything back to open source. All it does is possibly get someone using your product. However, a CD is a tangible thing. People remember when you give them a tangible thing. So basically, my advice to Freespire is to send out free CDs, talk about Open Source, but as long as you send out those free CDs you don't really need to worry too much about contributing to Open Source.
OMFG I hate KDE so much. I wish there was an Amarok that was native GNOME. The only good thing about Freespire is that it will allow all media to play out of the box. That said, 1 script from the Ubuntu Forums and they are working in Ubuntu too. This is not the problem in Linux. The problem is HARDWARE SUPPORT. Getting a wifi card that works out of the box is a pain in the ass. To paraphrase the big sweaty monkey at the MS Developers Conference "HARDWARE SUPPORT! HARDWARE SUPPORT! HARDWARE SUPPORT! HARDWARE SUPPORT! HARDWARE SUPPORT! HARDWARE SUPPORT! HARDWARE SUPPORT! HARDWARE SUPPORT! HARDWARE SUPPORT! HARDWARE SUPPORT! "

Yes, Freespire does Wifi and a damn good job of it too. They have a wifi control panel, all the latest wifi drivers out of the box and the ability to create profiles so you can easily switch from home to work. It's far superior to anything ubuntu has.

Ever heard of enlightened self-interest? It is possible to profit and be generous.
