vinterstille.dk — Here is a nice compilation of applications that can almost replace most Adobe and Macromedia applications including Photoshop, Illustrator, Flash, InDesign and many more. Most of these are geared for linux but most of them are on all platforms. Hope this helps.

As pointed out Nvu is a lot more like Dreamweaver than Bluefish is in terms of being WYSIWYG.

I wouldn't say this is a lit of replacements for those products. Most will only run in Linux which is great if you are running Linux. The windows world isn't even considered in this list.

My profession is web/graphic design and none of these offered programs are even close to being 'alternatives' - That's why I just run vmware ontop of linux for photoshop/flash, and sometimes dreamweaver. Pretty useless article.

@veamon:I think many of the detractors of OSS are so helpless and conditioned to think that they can't POSSIBLY accomplish something similar in an OSS app simply because there's an equivalent button or menu option that says [insert favorite missing function here]. When the day is done, and you look at the final result, I'm willing to bet that 90% or MORE will be completely unable to tell (or even care) that it was done in Photoshop, the GIMP, Flash4Linux, or whatever. There are a few exceptions (like high-end pre-press features missing from the GIMP), but by and large, they don't apply to most users. If you so detest OSS, then by all means, don't use it. But to refer to it as "crap" really shows how little you know about it, and how helpless you'd be without the stuff you've (hopefully) paid for.

hmm... people are still going on about the direct comparison between open source and propiretary software.. amazing.. What if I stated that great design doesn't come from software but from the heads of creative people.. 5blocksfree <a class="user" href="http://digg.com/users/5blocksfree">http://digg.com/users/5blocksfree</a> is right on the money! Do you think that flickr, basecamphq, what-have-we came from dreamweaver and photoshop?!?! If you do - please continue using theese products, you'll make my day if you do!

What most are overlooking here is that most of these projects were never started to be an "Adobe Killer" or a "Macromedia Killer." These applications were written by individuals that were writing something that suited their needs, therefore the interface wasn't designed by a GUI expert but things were merely put where they made sense to those making it. If they had wanted to be an exact replica of Illustrator or Freehand, they would have been able to study the interfaces to make them as close to the originals as possible. The best part about this software being open source is that all the information (source code) is there to make it into a what you want, look for projects that are trying to achieve the same goal as you have in mind, lend them a hand, or at least let them know what you would like to see. If nobody is working on what you want to see done, start putting together your own project, It can happen if you get involved.
