Free wifi coming from my house too, everyone come on over! There's no internet though, I'm not allowed to share my internet. But we can totally network together!
I would guess that he's trying to hide his MAC address, but I'm not sure. Obviously an open AP is either run by someone who is incompetent (and thus, hiding your MAC doesn't matter) or wants other people to use the AP (in which case there's no reason to hide your MAC either).

don't worry, somebody will find a way to bypass their software less than a week. it is insecure wifi connection after all
