torrentfreak.com — Franz Ferdinand have talked about downloading and piracy in the past. They have admitted to illegally copying music and expressed their support for file-sharing. Now they appear to have gone one step further by encouraging fans to pirate their latest track - a cover-version of a David Bowie song.

Technically the music is probably owned by Franz Ferdinand's record label. It would be very unusual for Franz to own their own masters, in which case, technically, the RIAA could take action against them for doing something that hurts exploitation of the masters. However, that is extremely unlikely given that it's a cover song. Kind of clever of them to encourage downloading on a cover, where the revenue stream is already impacted by royalties to the original artist.

The way I see it, if you like the music, you should support the artist in SOME way. Whether its buying merch, going to a show, or purchasing an album, you should support the music you enjoy.

It's not stealing. Pirates don't break into the Producers HQ at night and steal the masters. They're not being deprived of the physical property. It's an IP Violation.
