I used DejaNews a lot before Google bought it(it became google groups). I'm not going to completely blame Google for destroying its usefulness but Google certainly did not do what was needed to save web based news groups. So that lead to people building better versions like Slashdot, Digg and the enormous number of narrow interest web forums. If they would have better executed there never would have been a Digg. Which means they can certainly destroy Digg as they did DejaNews.
