I used to get 50-60mpg highway in my 97 Metro and it didn't look that dorky. All I had done was lower it (intrax springs), put a generic front lip skirt on it from JC Whitney, replace the stock coil with an accel unit, K&N filter, rear removable skirts, and I drove it like I had an egg under my foot. It was fun to see how much mileage I could get. A vacuum gauge helped too.
Only problem is you can't get that type of fuel economy with a vehicle that passes todays safety standards. How much do you think all those air bags, crumple zones and reinforcements weigh? That thing probably couldn't stand up to a 10mph impact with a bicycle.

The 1985 Honda Civic CRX HF indeed DID have the ability to get 60MPG, RESEARCH IT.
