His iBook did quite nicely. Mine is from October 2003 and it still works happily after daily use so to see his lasted for another year is a good sign. My own experience of PC laptops prior to my iBook was that I seemed to get through them far quicker. The typical lifespan was around 18 months by which point something crucial would fail (based on three machines all of which cost at least as much and generally more than the iBook). I have now bought a MacBook Pro although I am still using the iBook too since it has better battery life.
