joystiq.com — Coupled with some glowing press about the admittedly impressive specs of the PlayStation 3's Cell processor comes news that the console's long promised Folding@home client will be using all those leftover processing cycles on March 23rd. The distributed computing project will be accessible within the Network menu of the XrossMediaBar.

I'd rather save people than a lump of rock thanks.

"lump of rocks" ... you clearly know nothing about the planet you live on.Try to live on the moon instead. That's a lump of rocks. You'll quickly feel the difference.

I always thought that telephones should do this: they've got an always-on connection, are powered remotely, and are extremely numerous. Even with a low processing speed, the sheer number of always-on computers bashing away at these calculations would get an awful lot done. Naturally there are huge logistical problems with getting an installed base and paying for the associated costs, but one wonders if these calculations would not be favourable to such a system.

So you're saying playing games on a console is perfectly ok, yet running an app to find cures while you not playing just wastes electricity?

moeBMost distrubuted computing apps are closed source, so whilst there are linux clients of the @homes, it is x86 only and you can't recompile it for the cell.

This is actually a great use for the system, but the problem is leaving the PS3 on for this usage will eat up a LOT of power. The system takes something like 300 watts just to run games. Running this program and crunching numbers will sap your energy bill like mad. Its still the best use for a Ps3 yet.

No. It takes about 200 Watts. Stop going by the fanboy propaganda and test it yourself.

I think I would rather stress test the hell out of my PS3 while its under warranty. BTW leaving a computer / PS 3 running 24/7 stresses it far less than turning it on and off several times a day except for the fan bearings. MTBF on well designed electronics is a lot longer when its not power cycled all the time, besides, how am I going to get into my network if the workstations are shout down every night. As far as the advice that the 20 GB is better than a 60 GB PS3 BS! The 60 GB is built and looks better, and not having it attached to the Internet you are missing out on easy updates, LFP and RP.
