photoaxe.com — The focal length of a lens determines its angle of view, and also how much the subject will be magnified for a given photographic position. The aperture range of a lens refers to the amount of light that the diaphragm can let inside the camera to reach the sensor. Here are some pictures explaining this functions very clear.

When I was first learning, I had a great photography book that I wish I could remember the name. It had a lot of identical shots taken at various camera settings so you could really see the difference it makes. It's also very helpful to do the same thing yourself so you can see how your own camera reacts. You need a tripod, consistent light, and multiple subjects at different distances from the camera.

400mm is not "Extreme Telephoto". That's referring to 600+mm lenses.

Pics or it didn't happen.Seriously.. it has no photographs to illustrate the different settings and what impact they have on the resulting image. And would it have killed them to make some diagrams actually showing the inside of the camera lense and how the numbers they've show in tables are related to its moving parts? To me this isn't really the best documentation on the subject at all...buried.

I just got a canon sd600 for my birthday, it arrives on monday. It probably doesn't have aperture/focal length manual settings but I'm still pretty excited. Also, definitely dugg.

Even cheap point and click digital cameras usually have an option to change the aperture/exposure time

Oh, those wacky novices. Be sure to get some ND filters so you can open up your stop and reduce your depth of field without impacting your shutter speed. Ah, heck, just photoshop everything!
