worldnetdaily.com — WASHINGTON – Al Gore says switching from incandescent light bulbs to compact fluorescents can help save the planet from global warming. California, Canada and the European Union are so persuaded he's right, the three governments are in the process of banning the sale of incandescent light bulbs, following the trailblazing paths of Fidel Castro

Hunch? Hunch? are privy to inside information? a friend of Al's? sitting in the board room of GE? Good comment, this "movement" to CLF's is, as you said a transparent move to fill some one's wallet.

I remember when I was a kid, it was great when a thermometer broke, 'cause we'd get to play with the little balls of mercury for a while before they were thrown out. We also rode bikes to school and damn near everywhere else without wearing helmets and most of the guys spent their spare time in the fall hunting (oddly enough with real firearms). It's amazing we have lived so long. /* sarcasm

This won't be decided by people who sincerely want to help the environment. It will be decided by people who stand to profit from it. Not only will they make money on the CFL's, but on the facilities for recycling and disposing of old CFL's, at our expense.

HAAAAHAHAHAHAAAAAA! This is GREAT! Not the lady's problems -- I dropped a couple of fluorescent bulbs in the garage last week, and swept them into a pile, and forgot about the pile till just now!

Another great day for the enviro-nuts. These people are so wishy washy, they don't know up from down. Anyone who takes Al Gore seriously should have their head examined. This guy, along with John Edwards, are some of the biggest energy wasters in the country. They can do a good song and dance, but they don't practice what they preach. Unfortunately, this is very typical from the left. How can anyone take them seriously?

I heard a debate about this issue in NPR earlier as well. However there are couple of questions.1. The earlier bulbs had about 5mg of mercury, but newer bulbs are coming with lesser and lesser, the latest I heard was 2 mg.2. The Hg in CFL can be dangerous only if they break. If one has a bulb at a location that is prone to breakage they should use incandescent lamps there.3. The amount of mercury in these bulbs is generally 100 to 500 times less than the mercury present in thermometers which is more prone to breakage and cause contamination. The other points are true and we should be extremely careful in handling if the bulb breaks (Sometimes I wonder how dangerous were the broken tubelights spread around in the trash areas in India). The story is new but the issue is pretty old.
