metro.co.uk — After 36 years and billions of sales, the floppy disk is to join the video player, cassette deck and film camera on technology's scrapheap. The 9cm piece of plastic will no longer be available from Britain's biggest computer retailer. PC World announced last night it would stop selling the disks when stocks ran out.

512mb drives are $8 on newegg. That's what... three-hundred-something floppies? Is a single floppy that much cheaper? I'm sure there are places that sell 64mb flash drives in bulk for at most a dollar each. I guess that might still be a bit expensive compared to floppy disks in bulk, but the reliability of flash memory versus the magnetic disks would offset the difference wouldn't it? You wouldn't have to buy the floppies over and over again, and the space on the flash drives could be used for so much more.

I just got rid of all my floppies a few days ago after saving the files into my hard disk. I won't miss them though, they're slow and noisy and small.Nowadays most BIOS are able to boot from CD/DVD so there's no real need for the floppy.I'm in love with the USB drive now.

Floppy disks should have been retired years ago. I work for my university repairing computers and on more than a handful occasions students have come in trying to recover a 50 page research paper off their pre-historic floppy disk. The fact of the matter is, floppys are unreliable/unstable and anyone still using them is just pointing a gun at their own foot. Dish out the 10$ for a 128mb flash drive. On a side note...how big of a flop..py was zip disks?! Or better yet! LASERDISCS!!!! (those record size CD's that hold 45min worth of audio/video!)
