knoppix is great for quick testing, recovery, repair, and other quick light things. Great because it is a full OS and is made to run from a CD. Most other live disks are basically just CD previews that run slowly.
This is a great article for anyone trying to fix their b0rked boxen. You don't need to use Knoppix to find these instructions useful, they're good on any livecd or over the network connection you can use that has those tools installed.I dugg just for the info on dd_rescue. I'd never heard of it before, but you can bet that one will get used.
