My impression is that the comments system is about trying to keep comments on-topic to the post, and keeping threads available *only* to readers that are interested in those threads. I think it's perfectly fine as long as people aren't trying to be attention whores. Post a direct comment about the article to the top level and it works. Post a direct reply to someone elses post as it works. But trying to reply to someone and the article at the same time, and force people to see it because you're trying to be "right," and it doesn't.The *real* problem is what another user pointed out -- a horrible lack of findability. Your previous comments. Your friends' comments. Useful, highly ranked replies in folded message or even buried messages. It's made the pages easier to scan for the average user, but it actually does discourage commentary in a certain way because it makes comment voting and friend following less valuable in regular use.

This is so broken it's pathetic. I click on "Show 51 - 101 of 405 discussions" at the bottom of the page, and I get the same page - same comments 1 through 50 - except now it says "Show 101 - 151 of 405 discussions" at bottom. This happens in firefox and IE. If I right click and open in new tab or new window it works, but left click doesn't work. Anyone can fuk up, but going live with this crap, and keeping it live, can only be the work of imbeciles.
